We the people

13 days from August 16, 2011 have got big transformation in the lives and mindsets of Indians. The highs and lows, acceptances and rejections, smiles and disappointments, debates and arguments have enlightened a lot of issues. From my observation these are some of the key points:

1. Non-violence is the key: The most important lesson learnt is that - NOTHING CAN EVER BE GAINED OUT OF VIOLENCE. This whole movement stressed on ‘non-violence’ because of which it was a complete success. Any act done with good intentions and non-violence keeping in mind the ease and convenience of the common man will definitely gain positive results.

2. Unity in Diversity: Again this whole movement brought to light that the best example of unity in diversity is in India. People from all walks of life irrespective of caste, creed, culture or religion joined hands together and raised slogans to fight corruption. Every rally that I participated in, proved this point more than the previous one.

3. People’s power: Anna Hazare has awakened the spirit of each and every Indian to prove that – ‘WE THE PEOPLE’ is stronger than any other constitution in the country. Parliament is supreme but it is made up of members who are there only because of ‘WE THE PEOPLE’. There is a lot of strength and power in this ‘togetherness’ that can change the agenda and arguments of the parliament. This ‘people’s power’ is what revolutionized the way we all will think about our constitution henceforth.

4. Leaders: We do have some great speakers and good people yet in the parliament who proved it yesterday that the most important part of their duty is to protect the right of every citizen. At the same time, we have corrupt members of the House who openly disregarded and discredited the rights of citizens knowing the fact that the whole of the country was watching them on national television. The so-called young leaders did not prove their mettle barring Varun Gandhi who surprised everyone by his fabulous speech.
These rallies brought to light a very important point that - there are several Arvind Kejrivals, Kiran Bedis and Prashant Bhushans amongst us in our society. Their energy needs to be tapped for the betterment of our society. Like-minded people came together on the streets to show full support. They left their work and removed time from their daily schedule only to be a part of this movement. Then there were those who were complete cynics and unaffected and it did not bother them at all if anything was different in their neighborhood. Also, there were people who spoke too much but were not interested in joining the movement. Then there were those on the other side of the table who shunned this movement and called it madness.

I pray that this success always stays in our minds. The government stays on its word and passes the Janlokpal that will benefit each and every Indian. No bribes are exchanged. I wish that again someone does not have to go through a rigorous fast to make a right point in the House.
Let this torch of Indianness always be lit in our hearts and encourage us to do the best we can for our country. Jai Hind!
